Sir Alex Ferguson continues to be the Man Utd manager - for two-and-a-half decades now, and with no sign that he's had enough just yet. Still, now in his 70s the Scottish legend must surely be coming to the end of his spell in charge, and thought must turn to his successor. For me there are two leading nominees, and here's what I think of them:
Jose Mourinho: The so-called Special One is the leading candidate. He has won everything there is to win, including multiple Premier League trophies at Chelsea, and the Champions League at Porto. He is also known to be friends with Ferguson, which must count for something. Perhaps above all he is renowned as a tactical genius, someone who can outsmart any opposing manager, and when it comes to beating the current Barcelona team such tactical nous will be essential.
He's also admitted curiosity about coming back to manage in England as well as allegedly confirming to friends that Man Utd would be the ultimate challenge. Mourinho is not exactly the shy and retiring type, and his ego would surely relish the challenge to try and outdo the stunning record of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Pep Guardiola: A fantastic manager he may be; he's certainly great at building a team. In the 4-year spell at Barca, he's won just about everything. He has built arguably the greatest ever club side. Still, he has limited experience, and there must be some question marks over his true skill as a coach. After all, couldn't anyone lead that team to success? How well would he fare will less money to spend, and no Xavi, Iniesta and Messi running rings around every other team in Europe?
For me I'd like to see Jose Mourinho follow Sir Alex. He's the very best bet due to his great successes previously and powerful need to return to the English Premier League. I imagine that Ferguson himself will have sway over who supersedes him, and that lead to another taciturn Scot, David Moyes, or an ex-Man United stalwart like Steve Bruce, but if United have big aspirations they will surely choose Mourinho, a man who has achieved an amazing amount for one still so young.
